Fighting Infectious Chronic Endometritis with Antibiotics1

Chronic endometritis (CE) is a subtle inflammation characterised by the infiltration of plasma cells in the endometrial stromal area. Based on the infectious nature of CE, an investigation has shown that antibiotics can be beneficial for CE treatment. In the study, hysteroscopy, histology and immunohistochemistry for CD138 were performed to diagnose CE. 64 consecutive women diagnosed with CE were treated with antibiotic therapy while another 64 CE patients received no therapy. They were tested for CE twice to evaluate the cumulative cure rate, which was defined as the percentage of patients without CE at the cure test. For patients with persistent disease, antibiotic therapy was repeated up to 3 times. The cure rate was notably higher among patients receiving antibiotics (81.3%) versus no treatment (6%). Similarly, the cure rate was much higher in patients receiving 1 cycle of antibiotics (32.25%) than those receiving no treatment (6%). The findings supported that antibiotics can potentially be used to cure infectious CE.
