Salvianolic Acids: A Potential Natural Drug to Treat Acute Cerebral Infarction1

 

Salvianolic acids (SA) has been added to basic medicine therapy for the treatment of acute ischaemic stroke in China recently. Extensive studies have reported that its application could not only ameliorate infarction volume by suppressing inflammatory response and microglia activation in a rat middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model, but also could raise the perfusion of hypo-perfused brain tissue to improve neurological functions of postischaemic stroke in clinical trial. A mete-analysis including 58 randomised clinical trials with duration of treatments ranged from 10 to 28 days was performed to examine its impacts and safety. The results have demonstrated that SA combined with western medicine therapy improves neurological functions, daily activities and cognitive functions recovery on acute cerebral infarction patients. Additionally, the occurrence of adverse events due to SA can be controlled easily or disappear spontaneously.
