Usage of Antibiotic Envelope Helps in Minimising Major Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Infections1

 

The incidence of the cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) related infections, its associated morbidity and mortality have increased over the last decade. Two gram-positive organisms, including Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, are believed to stem from the contaminated subcutaneous pocket that harbours the system generator during device implantation whereas causing approximately 50% of CIED infections. A systemic meta-analysis involving 11,897 patients in five observational studies and one randomised clinical trial reported that the utilisation of an antibiotic envelope at the time of device implantation significantly reduces 74% of risks in major CIED related infections, specifically among patients at high risk for infections.
