The Effect of Low-Dose Vitamin K2 Supplement on Bone Mineral Density1
Osteoporosis is a common systemic skeletal disorder resulting in bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Pharmacological options have been emerging to address the imbalance between bone resorption and formation. A recent randomised controlled trial on the efficacies of vitamin K2 (VK2) supplementation on improving bone quality has recently been reported. In the trial, a total of 311 community-dwelling men and postmenopausal women aged 50 and 75 years were involved and randomly assigned to receive placebo, or VK2 supplement with calcium and vitamin D3 for 1 year. The results showed that VK2 supplementation in dose of 90 µg/day performed a significant effect on reducing bone loss in postmenopausal women, but in combination with calcium and vitamin D3 yielded no additional effects. Nonetheless, the findings demonstrated that VK2 supplement would be beneficial in reducing bone loss in postmenopausal women.
