The New Era of AI in Surgery

The surge in technological advances in the recent years has gradually moved from the past standardised therapy concept to a more personalised treatment. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) offers an unprecedented opportunity for personalised medicine with ever increasing popular approaches offered by AI in analysing highly complex data set, which may one day allow surgeons to make better clinical decisions. Moreover, with the release of ChatGPT on the 30th November, 2022 by OpenAI company allowed even larger dataset to be processed, and generate a coherent response in human language, the use of AI in the field of surgery is becoming a reality. More recently, an updated version of ChatGPT-4 capable of reading pictures was released. So, what can ChatGPT-4 do for surgeons? Well, it can help certainly analyse and process information from MRI, CT, and x-rays, thereby allowing surgeons to detect pathology and carry out preoperative planning. Furthermore, it may also help clinicians to analyse medical literatures, and patient records, which in turn assists them to formulate a more accurate differential diagnosis with proposed treatment options for the patient. ChatGPT-4 is also capable of analysing patient’s anatomical parameters and 3D images, therefore, this would then allow the orthopaedic surgeons to achieve a more accurate implant positioning and alignment during joint replacement. In conclusion, AI-based tools will become more important in both medicine and surgery and may one day serve as a right-hand man for the surgeons.
