While acoustic distraction is reported to increase the level of stress and would reduce surgical performance in operating room, music has been shown to improve learning and performance of complex motor skills. A recent randomised control trial involved 24 medical students demonstrated that students trained in the presence of classical music were superior in performing surgeon's square knots in terms of speed (p=0.006), knot quality (p=0.014) and procedural performance (p=0.034) compared with those trained in traditional environment. Hence, incorporation of pleasant music into surgical skills training or works involving complex motor skills should be considered.
