The Hormonal Change Triggered by E-sport
BY: Dr. Roy LauJul 1, 2020

E-sport competitions are organised in a relatively controllable setting as compared to those of physical sports, while existing research works on physiological and psychological impacts of E-sport are limited. A recent investigation on influencing factors on competitive performance in E-sport competitions reported the hormonal change in computer players during E-sport tournaments. The results showed a significant increase in mean cortisol levels during the game but response patterns were inconsistent. Of note, low to moderate levels of cortisol were associated with the highest performance and anxiety. Hence, E-sport induces hormonal change and anxiety simultaneously. Nonetheless, anxiety level appears to influence players’ performance during games.
