On 21st October 2023, The Hong Kong Respiratory Nursing College (HKRNC) held the 11th Annual General Meeting in Cordis Hotel, Mong Kok, which came with a hybrid seminar to discuss the management of asthma.

 

The event was opened with the President of the HKRNC, Mr. Ng Shu Wah, and Ms. Angel Wong introducing the seminar¡¦s theme and the guest speaker, Prof. Peter Wark. He is a Conjoint Professor of Medicine at Monash University, the Director of Cystic fibrosis and RES2, AIRMED, Alfred Health in Melbourne, as well as an Adjunct Professor with the University of Newcastle and a senior affiliate researcher at the Hunter Medical Research Institute. To discuss the current treatment landscape in severe asthma with type 2 inflammation with biologics, he introduced the evolution of asthma understanding, the diagnosis and the treatment goals based on GINA 2023. Furthermore, he explained the use of biomarkers to assess the treatment progress and outcome in type 2 inflammation, and the strategy of initiating biologic therapies.

 

Following the enriching presentation were the AGM and the coffee break. After that, there were two more lectures on different aspects of asthma management by Mr. Ng and Ms. Maggie Lit. Mr. Ng commenced his presentation with a new study on COPD in Hong Kong, followed by noteworthy clinical practice in patient assessment and choosing an appropriate inhaler device for asthma patients. Ms. Maggie Lit, the former President of the HKRNC, talked about self-management for asthma patients, highlighting the need for patient education and effective communication with patients¡¦ caretakers. The seminar was closed with Mr. Ng thanking all the speakers and participants for making it a fruitful event.
