Association of Spontaneous Abortion with Increased Risk of Premature Mortality
BY: Yan ChiuJun 30, 2021

Spontaneous abortion is one of the most common adverse outcomes of pregnancy, with an estimated prevalence of 12-24%. To investigate the association of spontaneous abortion with the risk of all-cause and cause-specific premature mortality (death before the age of 70), 101, 681 ever gravid female nurses participated in a prospective cohort study and it was found that spontaneous abortion was associated with a greater risk of premature death, particularly from cardiovascular disease. The association was particularly strong for recurrent spontaneous abortions and spontaneous abortions occurring early in a woman’s reproductive life. This study also suggested that spontaneous abortion could be an early marker of future health risk in women, including an increased risk of premature death.
