The 35th Anniversary of Hong Kong Peritoneal Dialysis First Policy

The health burden of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is substantial and has been increasing gradually in Hong Kong, whereas dialysis is the lifeline for the majority of patients with ESRD. With the establishment of the Central Renal Committee in 1985, the planning for local renal service became standardised. The committee advocated peritoneal dialysis (PD) as the first-line dialysis modality for all patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who required dialysis. With the PD-first policy, Hong Kong achieved the highest proportion of dialysis population treated with PD. On 28th March, 2021, the Hong Kong Society of Nephrology and the International Association of Chinese Nephrologists jointly organised the “Hong Kong Peritoneal Dialysis First Policy 35th Anniversary Scientific Symposium”. Presentations on clinical issues and future development of PD offered by renowned experts in nephrology from Asia-Pacific countries attracted more than 600 participants from 25 countries/regions to the symposium, indicated the clinical significance of the topics covered.
