Double-edged Correlation between Daytime Napping Duration and Metabolism-related Diseases
BY: Yan ChiuMar 24, 2021

Daytime napping is a common practice in many countries which is believed to reduce sleep deficits and improve emotional status. However, a recent Chinese study has suggested that daytime napping may be detrimental to our health under certain conditions whereas the daytime napping duration may have different impacts on health outcome. The study indicated that a short daytime napping duration (within a half hour) was associated with a reduced rate of metabolism-related diseases such as dyslipidemia, fatty liver and central obesity. Meanwhile, longer daytime napping duration (more than 1 hour) was independently associated with a higher prevalence of diabetes. Further studies are needed to investigate the potential impacts of daytime napping on the risk of metabolism-related diseases.
